Ultrasonic Spray Coating for Selective Layer for Flow Batteries

The all-vanadium redox flow battery is a core energy storage device suitable for future new energy systems, effectively addressing the energy storage needs and application challenges during the energy transition. However, vanadium ion crossover is a critical bottleneck that limits the performance improvement and lifespan extension of all-vanadium redox flow batteries. Therefore, developing high-selectivity membranes and efficiently suppressing vanadium ion crossover are of paramount importance for optimizing the comprehensive performance of all-vanadium redox flow batteries and promoting their large-scale application.

This study employs ultrasonic spray coating technology to directly construct a selective barrier layer on the surface of commercial membranes, achieving the preparation and optimization of high-performance barrier films. The ultrasonic spray coating technique boasts exceptional process flexibility, enabling not only the adaptation to various substrate materials for spray deposition but also flexible adjustment of the composition ratio of the spray slurry, providing ample control space for barrier layer performance optimization. Meanwhile, this technology has achieved commercialized large-scale application, with mature processes and strong replicability, perfectly meeting the industrial batch production requirements for barrier layer materials and overcoming the bottleneck of traditional laboratory preparation processes that are difficult to implement.

To further validate the scalability of the process, large-scale device testing was conducted. The results confirmed that the barrier layer can effectively suppress vanadium ion permeation losses under high operational conditions. When applied to the thinner NafionTM NR211 membrane, the battery’s energy storage efficiency was further improved, demonstrating that the ultrasonic spray-coating method for preparing the barrier layer combines superior performance advantages with industrial application potential, providing a reliable technical pathway for the large-scale production of high-performance membranes in all-vanadium redox flow batteries.
