Why is it Necessary to Prepare Surface Coatings?
The surface of a material is the first line of defense against its interaction with the external environment or other substances, directly determining the performance of the material in practical applications. Therefore, special treatment is usually required through surface engineering techniques. It can be said that the surface of the material is the “forefront” where it functions, and preparing surface coatings is equivalent to building a “protective layer” for this battlefield, enabling it to better adapt to complex working conditions.
According to different application scenarios, the preparation of surface coatings can be mainly divided into the following four categories:
1. Implement surface functionalization
By coating the substrate with special properties that it does not possess, it is endowed with new functions. For example, forming insulation layers on metal surfaces, constructing heat-resistant layers on high-temperature component surfaces, and preparing absorbing or transmitting layers on specific aviation equipment surfaces. Specifically, it is to prepare the surface of materials with specific physical and chemical functions such as light, electricity, sound, magnetism, heat, and chemistry.
2. Extend the service life of components
Enhance the surface tolerance of the substrate by preparing a reinforced coating. For components that operate under harsh working conditions, such as transmission parts, support parts, etc., wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant coatings can be formed on their surfaces to reduce wear and environmental erosion, and extend the overall service life.
3. Support repair and remanufacturing
One of the important applications of surface coating is the surface repair of components to restore their original geometric shape. With the development of surface technology, remanufacturing has become a hot research topic in the industry. Unlike traditional repairs, remanufacturing not only restores the material’s shape, but also requires the repaired surface to have better performance than the original state. Through the systematic application of advanced surface technology, the overall performance of the equipment can be upgraded and reused.
4. Achieving a balance between cost and performance
Preparing high-value coatings on low-cost substrate surfaces can significantly improve overall performance while reducing overall manufacturing costs, achieving the goal of increasing efficiency and reducing costs. For example, superconducting characteristic coatings, high entropy alloy characteristic coatings, etc., are all achieved through this method to optimize the matching of material properties and costs.
Preparation of surface coating by ultrasonic spraying machine
The ultrasonic spraying machine uses ultrasonic vibration energy to prepare coatings. Its core principle is that the transducer converts electrical energy into high-frequency mechanical vibration, which acts on the coating to atomize the liquid material into micrometer sized uniform droplets. Then, the droplets are accurately transported to the surface of the substrate through low-pressure airflow, and the coating is formed by drying or curing.
This technology has no high-pressure airflow impact during the atomization process, low droplet kinetic energy, and can avoid substrate damage, especially suitable for flexible and sensitive substrates. Its advantages are significant: the atomized droplets have uniform particle size, can form coatings with controllable thickness (several nanometers to tens of micrometers) and high flatness, and the material utilization rate exceeds 85%, greatly reducing waste.
At present, it is widely used in microelectronics (such as chip conductive coatings), biomedical (such as stent biocompatibility coatings), new energy (such as battery electrode coatings) and other fields, especially suitable for precision surface coating scenarios with high requirements for coating uniformity and substrate protection.
